TL;DR — the short version

  • Jordan Lake and Falls Lake are the two big reservoirs near Raleigh, and both allow motorized watercraft.
  • Jordan Lake is the largest and most open - best for riding, boating and long lake days.
  • Falls Lake is closer to north Raleigh and Wake Forest, with calmer, narrower water.
  • Lake Johnson, Lake Wheeler and Lake Raleigh are city lakes: great for paddling and walking loops, not for jet skis.
  • If you want speed and open water, drive to Jordan or Falls. If you want a quiet paddle after work, stay in the city.

Which lakes near Raleigh allow jet skis?

Short answer: the big reservoirs. Jordan Lake and Falls Lake both permit motorized watercraft, which is why every jet ski operator in the Triangle works on one or both. The smaller city lakes inside Raleigh are paddle-only or restrict motors, so they are lovely places to spend an afternoon but not places to ride.

Jordan Lake

Roughly 14,000 acres across Chatham County, with wide main-channel water and several public access areas. It is the closest big lake for Cary, Apex, Morrisville, Chapel Hill and Pittsboro.

Best for: jet skiing, boating, swim beaches, all-day groups.

Wide open water on Jordan Lake
Jordan Lake gives groups the most room to spread out.

Falls Lake

A long reservoir following the Neuse River northwest out of Raleigh. Narrower than Jordan with more shoreline and coves, and the shortest drive for north Raleigh, Wake Forest and Rolesville.

Best for: first-time riders, calmer water, camping and shorter trips.

Calm cove water on Falls Lake
Falls Lake trades open water for sheltered coves.

The city lakes

Lake Johnson, Lake Wheeler and Lake Raleigh sit inside the city and are built around greenway loops, kayak and paddleboard rentals and picnic areas. They are the right call for a quiet weekday evening.

They are not jet ski lakes. If someone tells you they rent jet skis on Lake Johnson, they are describing a different activity.

How to choose

Choose on what you want to do first, and drive time second. Riding, tubing and open water mean Jordan or Falls. Paddling, walking and a picnic mean a city lake fifteen minutes from your door.
