The Triangle is landlocked, but it has two large lakes within 40 minutes of downtown Raleigh. Here is what to do on them, and how to plan the day.
If you want open water near Raleigh, you have two real choices: Jordan Lake and Falls Lake. Between them you get roughly 26,000 acres of water, swim beaches, boat ramps, campgrounds and enough shoreline to spend a whole summer exploring. Everything else within the Beltline is a paddle-only city lake.
A lake day is also the easiest group plan in the Triangle — it works for families, birthdays, bachelor and bachelorette weekends, and visitors who have already done the museums. Start with a lake, then pick an activity.
About 14,000 acres in Chatham County, roughly 35 minutes from Raleigh. The most open water in the region — best for riding distance, wake jumping and big-group lake days.

Jordan Lake and Falls Lake are the two big open-water options within 40 minutes of Raleigh. Both allow jet skis, boats, kayaks and paddleboards, and both have designated swim beaches. Smaller city lakes such as Lake Johnson, Lake Wheeler and Lake Crabtree are paddle-only.
Falls Lake is closest to the city and usually calmer. Jordan Lake is bigger, with more open water for riding. For paddling and a short drive, Lake Johnson or Lake Wheeler.
A morning on jet skis at Jordan or Falls Lake works well as the anchor activity, then downtown Raleigh or Durham in the evening. Riders take turns in one- or two-hour blocks, or you can book a half day for the group.
Both lakes stay open year round for hiking, picnicking and paddling. Jet ski rentals run through the warm season only.
