Durham's own water — Lake Michie and Little River Reservoir — is drinking water supply, so motorized recreation is off the table. That leaves the two big reservoirs on either side of the city, and Durham is unusually well placed for both.
Falls Lake is northeast, reached along NC 98 out through Bahama and Rougemont, or down toward the Wake County access areas. It is the calmer, cove-heavy option.
Jordan Lake is south, via 15-501 through Chapel Hill or NC 751 past Southpoint. If you are already on the south side of Durham, Jordan is genuinely quick — and it is the more open ride.
