Falls Lake is a long, narrow reservoir stretching northwest from Raleigh along the Neuse River. Its shape means more shoreline, more coves and generally a quieter ride than Jordan Lake, and it is the closest big water to north Raleigh, Wake Forest and Durham.
Falls Lake runs alongside NC 50 and Creedmoor Road north of Raleigh, with I-540 giving quick access from most of Wake County. It is typically the shorter drive for riders from Raleigh, Wake Forest, Rolesville, Durham and Knightdale.
Because Falls is long and narrow rather than wide and open, wind has less room to build chop. That makes it a forgiving place to learn, and it means a breezy afternoon that has Jordan bouncing can still be a smooth ride here.
