Do You Need a License to Ride a Jet Ski in North Carolina?
North Carolina's boater education rule explained in plain language, plus the minimum age for operating a personal watercraft.
There is no boating license in NC — but there is a rule
North Carolina does not issue a general recreational boating license. What it does have is a boater education requirement: anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 must complete an approved boating safety education course before operating a vessel powered by a motor of 10 horsepower or more. A jet ski counts.
If that applies to you, carry proof of completion. Approved courses are listed by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission, and several can be completed online.
Minimum age
State law sets 14 as the minimum age to operate a personal watercraft in North Carolina, with education requirements attached for the ages that require them. Younger children can ride along as passengers.
What we will need from you
Our own rider and driver requirements are being finalized and will be published on our safety page. At minimum, expect to show a photo ID and, where the education rule applies, proof that you have completed an approved course.
